What We Do

Since SEEDS inception we have accomplished a great deal in various different regions around Ethiopia. Below you'll find out about our current projects, and those that we've completed.

Current Projects:

  • Addis Ababa
    • SEEDS continues to support eleven children, that were the first to receive sponsorship from us, to attend school (at Mesrack del Elementary School). Some of these children have now graduated from high school and have gone on to attend trade school or, in some instances, medical school.
    • SEEDS supports fifty children attend the school of their choice by paying school fees, mandatory school uniforms, change of clothes and any other supplies necessary. These children were those that previously went to the Chapter 1 School that we managed.
    • SEEDS set up a micro-credit business for the families of our supported children. So far 39 families have borrowed money from us to start up their own business to be able to eventually support their families themselves.
  • Sendafa
    • We have recently partnered with Legadi Elementary School. Legadi is the only elementary school in Sendafa (a community located 38 miles north of Addis Ababa. SEEDS is currently supporting 71 children to attend school by purchasing mandatory school uniforms, shoes and other needed supplies.
    • We are looking into acquiring a plot of land to start a school garden for the children and families to learn about nutrition and gardening and start to grow their own vegetables.

Previous Projects:

  • Addis Ababa
    • We partnered with Mesrack del Elementary School to provide support to over 40 children so that they could attend a full day, non-profit, private school program. This support included:

      • school fees, mandatory uniforms, extra clothing, meals, recreational activities
      • a donation of computers and books to the school library was made
    • In 2007 SEEDS opened Chapter 1, a non-profit pre-school, serving 40 children. We:
      • partnered with the Kebele (community municipal authority) in choosing the most needy families to be helped
      • offered support to children and families by paying for school fees, mandatory uniforms, soap and hygiene materials.

In 2010 SEEDS made the difficult decision to close the Chapter 1 Pre-School. Rent continued to increase and we felt that our money could be better used by supporting the children attend pre-existing schools rather than paying for rent and teachers' salaries at our building.

  • Chila, Wolo Project

We operated in Chila, a remote village, lacking power, sewer, water and good roads.

    • Supported 35 children (primarily girls) to attend the primary school and provided financial support to the families.
    • Funded the development of a water well.
    • Support and supplies were offered to the secondary school in nearby Amdework.
  • Sekota
    • We supported 50 children to attend pre-school.
    • SEEDS was able to find medical attention and support for a family of 6 orphans who were suffering from severe goiders. All 6 have now been treated and are being taken care of by a social services equivalent in the area.

Unfortunately, after numerous attempts to build a strong partnership in Sekota, SEEDS was left feeling insecure in the relationships that had been built and looked into alternative options. We have since been able to find local sponsors or other organizations in the area to support the 50 children we were supporting to be able to focus on areas closer to Addis Ababa.
