Volunteer for SEEDS

SEEDS would not be able to accomplish its goals without the ongoing support of the many volunteers and supporters of the organization. The running of an international development organization requires the talents, skills and hard work of a variety of people. The following are ways you can contribute towards the vision of SEEDS.

  • Become a member of the society. Through the purchase of a membership you express and exercise ownership in the mission of the organization, through the role of being a society member.
  • Join the Board of Directors. Vacancies occur on a rotating term basis.
  • Volunteer at some of the fundraising events.
  • Sit on a working committee to assist in an important aspect of the organizations work.
  • Offer a special talent you think the organization could benefit from.
  • Tell others about the important work of SEEDS and help to build and strengthen our network of supporters.
  • Many individuals are unable to afford the time to fill a volunteer role, but commit to a yearly donation in support of our work.
  • SEEDS has started to provide volunteer opportunities in Ethiopia. Contact us to explore these opportunities.

Volunteer Stories

Katie and myself (Janice) are two Edmonton public teachers who travelled with Meheret Worku with Sustainable East African Education and Development Society of Alberta (S.E.E.D.S.) during the summer of 2008 to Ethiopia.

Our experience in Ethiopia was phenomenal. From the moment we landed the children and people we met were extraordinary for so many reasons. S.E.E.D.S. sponsors pre-school children in Addis Ababa and elementary children in Chila, the northern province of Wolu.  Chapter One pre-school provides the three to six year olds basic needs as they had been through such hardships at home. Katie and I helped them the alphabet, phonics, and the days of the week by the time we left.  They are a happy, willing bunch of children who are always receptive. We taught them simple songs to help them with their learning and also enjoyed playing with them outside lessons.

The junior high school students had a passion to learn and were so optimistic about their futures. Although we were only there for three weeks, we felt that the connections we made with the children, and the project will last a lifetime.

The strength and the beauty of the African countryside really gripped me. Rolling mountains, picturesque trees, patches of farmland between vast fields, small little collections of homes, some straw, some clay and some wood. Most homes were small and circular in shape. Most of the people seemed to be involved in farming. It was all manual. Donkeys and oxen were being used to till the fields. People were on their hands and knees to plant crops. Everywhere, children were playing and working.
The aid that S.E.E.D.S. provides to their local community in Chila and Chapter One is extraordinary and I am so proud to have been apart of it.
